His PhD project aims to deliver tools for the simulation of particle separation in depth filtration and to support the understanding of filtration kinetics and particle deposition by analyzing the composition and loading of depth filters with tomographic imaging methods. The model for the simulation uses a discretized 1D-approach while retaining the possibility for structural optimizations of the filter medium. The idea behind the model is to utilize real structural data from tomographic imaging to determine the filtration kinetics in each discrete element of the filter. This method provides reasonable accuracy at greatly reduced computational demands, when compared to CFD-Simulations.
