Abstract

Amorphous Solid Dispersions (ASDs) are molecular dispersions of an active ingredient (AI) in a polymer carrier, gaining in importance in the life science industry. Nevertheless, ensuring the physical stability of ASD formulations is still challenging as the AI tends to phase separation and crystallises subsequently. This study focuses on determining diffusion coefficients of active ingredients in amorphous polymers as an underlying parameter for the kinetic stability of ASDs.

Description

During the last decades, significant steps have been taken in combating the spread of malaria. Long-lasting insecticide-treated nets as well as indoor residual sprays are two important techniques for controlling malaria. With the growing resistance of malaria vectors against commonly used insecticides, the need for the development and application of new classes of insecticides is increasing.
However, newly developed insecticides pose challenges in terms of strong efficacy variations with respect to their solid state.

Molecularly dispersing the active ingredient in a polymer carrier is one approach to address the efficacy issue. Within the scope of this study, deeper insights into molecular phenomena in polymeric systems containing active ingredients are gained, including phase behaviour and diffusion.

This research project is a cooperation of INVITE GmbH in Leverkusen and TU Dortmund.
