Defense of Doctoral Thesis by Dominik Sleziona

We are pleased to announce that Dominik Sleziona has successfully defended his doctoral thesis at the Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering. His dissertation addresses innovative approaches to enhance the water solubility of pharmaceutical active ingredients.

In his research, Mr. Sleziona developed a novel method for manufacturing solid crystalline suspensions (SCS), wherein submicron crystalline drug particles are embedded into a crystalline carrier matrix. By modifying the established wet stirred media milling process, he achieved comminution of active pharmaceutical ingredients in the melt state, enabling the production of SCS with superior properties.
A significant focus of his work was the development investigation method in a laminar flow channel for precise determination of the intrinsic dissolution behavior of drugs under defined flow conditions. This method overcomes the limitations of conventional pharmacopeial dissolution testing and facilitates the collection of physically meaningful data during the dissolution process.
Particularly noteworthy is his application of phase field simulations to predict dissolution behavior. Using this approach—well-established in materials science but relatively novel in pharmaceutical research—he successfully modeled the dissolution characteristics of both diffusion-controlled and surface reaction-controlled substances, validating his models with experimental data.
Dominik Sleziona continues his professional career at Covestro Deutschland AG as an expert in solids process engineering. We congratulate him on his scientific achievement and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
