Abstract
Poorly water-soluble drugs pose a challenge for bioavailability and formulation development (Dobrowolski et al. 2019). In preliminary work a melt electrostatic precipitator was developed to produce solid crystal suspensions which increase the dissolution behavior of poorly water-soluble drugs. The process is based on the electrostatic precipitation of submicron drug particles, which are subsequently embedded in a hydrophilic carrier matrix. (Dobrowolski et al. 2019; Justen et al. 2023; Justen et al. 2024). Building on this work, the project aims to validate the technology and extend its application to various pharmaceutical dosage forms.
Description
The project focuses on two key applications: enhancing the oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs and developing dosage forms for topical and parenteral administration. Part of this work is the identification of suitable carrier materials for different applications. Furthermore, the project addresses the maximum load of submicron drug particles possible in the solid crystal suspension, and focuses on establishing a continuous solidification process.
